Raise Testosterone With Fasting

When I talk about the hormone testosterone, clients often think the topic only applies to men, however testosterone plays an equally important role in women. Common symptoms of low testosterone in women can look like depression and mood swings, low libido, muscle loss or an inability to put on muscle. How does testosterone get made?  This is a good question, because men and women make testosterone in different parts of the body. But the signaling system for both men and women starts in the brain. The brain, specifically the hypothalamus and pituitary gland sends a message down to the ovaries (if you’re a woman) and the testes (if you're a male) to tell those organs to produce testosterone.  However,

Can fasting increase your happiness?

Given the times that we are in, I think the world could use a little bit more happiness, and really, who doesn't want more happiness in their life? So, can we use fasting to increase happiness? This week I'm diving into that exact question on my Youtube channel. Check out my newly released video on how we can use fasting to increase happiness, as Part 3 of my Fasting and Hormones Series. We know from neuroscience that certain nutritional deficiencies and neurotransmitters imbalances can affect our levels of perceived happiness. Science also shows us that we can use fasting as a tool to improve the functioning of these neurotransmitters, in turn raising our levels of happiness.  There are 4

Can Intermittent Fasting Help You Lose Weight?

2020-10-17T00:57:33+00:00Fasting Techniques, Health|

You may have seen a recent study making headlines titled, Intermittent fasting doesn’t help you lose weight, claiming that “a 12-week UCSF study of 116 overweight people found no statistically significant difference in weight loss between people who restricted their eating to a specific eight-hour period every day and those who didn’t.” This is not the first time fasting has been challenged. Fasting is truly an art form, requiring a deep understanding of how fasting can be used as an effective health tool. So when articles like these come out, I like to dig deeper into the science and methods used by the researchers, to understand how they came to the conclusions they did.  Watch my full video where

Balancing your Hormones: The Hormonal Hierarchy

The key to balancing your hormones lies within the concept of the hormonal hierarchy. I know, who knew that hormones had a hierarchy? What I mean by this is that certain hormones have more power over others. So, if you want to influence sex hormones (at the bottom of the hierarchy), you need to work on your oxytocin, cortisol and insulin levels.  So, if you’re struggling with fasting or balancing your hormones (PCOS, mood swings, menopause, etc), there are a few things that you should understand... Let's start by understanding the hormonal hierarchy. Oxytocin Oxytocin is at the top of the hormone hierarchy, thus the most influential hormone. It’s known as the "cuddle hormone" or the "love hormone," because

Women and Fasting Myths

I'm dispelling all the women and fasting myths today in my new youtube video, and talking about how women of every age group should be fasting...because when it comes to fasting, age does matter!  Some of the common women and fasting myths include: Fasting isn't safe for women. False. If you’re not convinced, watch Why every woman should be fasting. Fasting will tank women's hormones. False. Fasting actually helps balance hormones through the mechanisms of the Hormonal Hierarchy. Certain hormones have more power over others. So if you want to influence sex hormones, which are at the bottom of the hierarchy, you need to work on your oxytocin, cortisol and insulin levels.  Women need to fast differently than men.

Let me say this loud and clear, women should be fasting. There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings about how fasting affects women, so I wanted to dive in today into the science and research around women and fasting.  In a meta analysis of over 44 peer reviewed studies done on fasting and women, the study concluded that “fasting can be prescribed as a safe medical intervention, as well as a lifestyle regimen which can improve women’s health in many folds.” Read that again! Specifically, they found 5 different categories where fasting helps women. Cancer This meta analysis looked at 3 different types of fasts and how they affected cancer. The first was the fast mimicking diet, made

What should you do when you feel hungry while fasting? I know this seems like a silly question, but every single one of us who’ve fasted know exactly what this feels like. One of the most overlooked aspects of fasting is how we can preemptively create a strong fasting mindset and action plan. Here are 9 ways to help you overcome feelings of hunger while fasting: Here are 9 ways to overcome hunger when fasting: 1.Stabilize blood sugar One of the first things to help you overcome hunger is before you begin fasting, make sure that your blood sugar is stable. I can tell you that it won’t be very productive to load up on unhealthy foods right before

We know that fasting has tremendous health and anti-aging benefits, like stem cell production, DNA repair and neurological benefits that combat mood disorders and Alzheimer’s. However new research suggests that there is a specific type of fast that can increase longevity!  In a human study done in 2019, scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) and Kyoto University found that fasting may “boost human metabolic activity, generate antioxidants, and help reverse some effects of aging.” 3 Specific Anti-Aging Benefits of a 58 hour fast 1. Heightened Repair Mode Researchers found that fasting forced the body into repair mode. We actually know this from many other studies done on fasting, however this study was able

Improve Athletic Performance with Fasting

We know that fasting can turn on good genes and turn off bad genes, like those linked to liver, breast, lung, colon and brain cancer. So I wondered whether fasting could have the same effect on genes that promote athletic performance. The answer I got was yes, fasting can improve athletic performance!  A study on Russian elite endurance athletes found the group of athletes had an increased frequency of the UCP3 (mitochondrial uncoupling protein 3) gene compared to a control group. Simply put, more UCP3 equated to better athletic performance.  They found that two types of fasting could activate the gene expression of UCP3 independent of genes necessary for lipid transport and oxidation in skeletal muscle. Specifically, it found

Keto and Fasting for Kids

I get it, instilling healthy eating habits in kids can be challenging. Kids’ taste buds are programmed from a young age by the food industry to crave chemical, preservative and additive-filled foods while we’re over here trying to get them to like broccoli!  But childhood is the prime time for laying the foundations of positive and life-long healthy eating habits. We know that our immune system relies on strong metabolic health, which is determined by the foods we eat! Teaching healthy eating habits to your kids at a young age is essential for their health into adulthood. During my Fast Training week I focused on sugar-free eating for the whole family, kids included! It has come to our attention
