There are many factors that go into weight loss. The old calories in, calories out theory of weight loss has proven to not be a long term solution.

Stop and think about this for a moment.

Years ago, we used to talk on a phone that was plugged into a wall. In fact, when I was a teenager, my sister and I thought we were so cool because we had a phone who’s cord was long enough we could move from room to room while talking. And back then, I felt grateful because my dad sent me off to college with a typewriter with built in white out.

A lot has changed since then, hasn’t it?

Well you know what else has changed? How we approach weight loss.

We know a lot more now. With advances in technology, researchers have been able to understand why the body holds onto weight and what steps you need to take to lose it.

If you are following the same rules of weight loss you did years ago, it will be as difficult as writing a term paper on a typewriter.

Ready to lose weight for good? Then it’s time to upgrade your knowledge about weight loss.

Here are some key principles I teach my patients about weight loss:

1. Toxins shut down your fat burning capabilities

Toxins block receptor sites for key weight loss hormones like leptin. Leptin is this miraculous hormone that gets released from the fat and sends a signal to the brain to burn fat for energy.

If your toxic load is high. If you are eating chemical laden foods, if you are still using beauty products packed with chemicals, if your body has accumulated heavy metals, you brain will not be able to read the leptin. It doesn’t know the fat is there to use as an energy source.

If you want to lose weight for good, you need to start by pulling these toxins out.

2. You need fat to burn fat

You have been brain washed. Fat is not bad.

The human body needs fat to function properly. Sixty percent of your brain is fat. Hormones get carried through the bloodstream on fat. Fat will fill you up. And it will signal to the brain that fat is the preferred source of fuel to burn for energy.

If you want to lose weight, you need to start adding good fat into your diet.

3. Carbohydrates are the enemy

The low carb fad is here to stay. The human body does not thrive on a high carbohydrate diet. Especially one that is packed with refined sugars.

Think about it for a moment. Is obesity more prevalent or less prevalent than years ago?

More, right? Because of the low fat movement that started years ago, the food industry has  been pulling fat out of many of your food products. In order to make the food taste better they have been increasing the sugar. This has most likely changed your tastebuds, and caused you to become weight loss resistant.

If you want to lose weight, you need to limit your carbohydrates.

4. Don’t eat less, eat less often

One of the only benefits of the growing cancer rates in our country, is that it has sent researchers back to the lab to search for new ways to get the body to repair itself.

Turns out one of those ways is through fasting. Especially intermittent fasting.

Fasting signals to the brain to repair itself. It causes stem cells to be released in your body. Stem cells contribute to the body’s ability to renew and repair its tissues. It also can help the receptor sites that are packed with toxins, unblock themselves.

But how long should you fast? I recommend starting with fifteen hour fast, everyday. Train your brain and body to not eat for fifteen hours and watch miracles begin to happen.

What that looks like is you stop eating at 8pm and you don’t eat until 11am the next day. You can consume as much food as you want between 11am and 8pm. It’s that simple.

If you want to lose weight, you need to begin to incorporate periods of fasting into your life.

Need a place to start with all these new weight loss strategies?

I apply something called the 5-1-1 to many of my patients lives. Five days a week you eat a low carbohydrate diet. I recommend less than 50 grams a day. One day a week you fast completely. You can do bone broth that day if you prefer. And one day a week is a feast day. Eat over 150 grams of carbohydrates that day.
