Today is the day I end all confusion on which milk is the healthiest to drink.

If there is one nutrition topic I have discussed with patients the most over the years, it is this one. Everyone seems to have their own preference and their own opinion about which milk they think they should drink.

Milk can either be your body’s worst enemy, or it’s the greatest friend. It all depends on which milk you choose.

Let’s start by looking at the traditional milk that most people are drinking:

PASTEURIZED MILK

This type of milk does not do the body good. It is dead food. When they put this milk through a pasteurization process it kills all enzymes, proteins, vitamins, even calcium.

These cows are treated with hormones and antibiotics will destroy your health. It also contains a protein molecule called beta A1 casein that is difficult for the human gut to break down. Without enzymes to help it break down, A1 casein molecules can sit on the sides of your large intestines for years and purify. I know, it’s that gross!

Reset Factor Recommendation: Avoid this milk at all our cost

ORGANIC PASTEURIZED MILK

Organic means that they can not put growth hormone and antibiotics of these cows. This is good news since the ingestion of growth hormone and antibiotics cause cancer, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune conditions.

But, don’t be fooled into thinking this is a health drink. In the pasteurization process, they still kill all the beneficial nutrients that dairy could offer.

Reset Factor Recommendation: Drink this milk in extreme moderation

PASTEURIZED GOAT’S MILK

Goat’s milk is easier for the human gut to digest it. It has a protein molecule called beta A2 casein. A2 milk is much easier for your body to break down. This is why many people who are lactose intolerant can do goat’s milk. Sheep milk has this same protein.

If I raw goat’s milk was readily available, that would be the perfect milk. But finding raw goat’s is nearly impossible unless you know a goat farmer. Raw goat’s cheese, on the other hand, is easy to find and can be a great cheese to eat.

Reset Factor Recommendation: Good alternative to cow’s pasteurized milk, easier for your body to digest, but still not adding key nutrients and probiotics that raw milk can add. Drink in moderation.

ORGANIC RAW MILK

Ok, now we are talking health. Raw milk is my favorite. Since they don’t pasteurize this milk, it is packed with enzymes and probiotics that are necessary for your gut to break down the milk casein.

Raw milk is also great for athletes since it is filled with Omega 3 Fatty Acids that reduce inflammation in the body.

The challenge with this milk is that it is hard to find. For whatever reason, raw milk is controversial in our country, so you won’t find it at your local supermarket. The best place to go searching for this milk is your local farmer’s market.

Reset Factor Recommendation: Drink, eat, consume as much of this milk as you want.

NUT MILK

These types of milk have become very popular. If you pick the right nut milk, it can be a great source of protein for you. But there are two very specific things you need to look out for:

  • added sugars
  • carrageenan

Sweetened nut milk is too high in sugar and will put you on a fast path to weight loss resistance. Carrageenan is a toxic ingredient that has been linked to irritable bowel and colon cancer.

Reset Factor Recommendation: Make this one yourself. It is easy to make and you will get the freshest ingredients. If you don’t want to make it my next recommendation is to look for your nut milk in the refrigerated section at your grocery store. Those are less likely to be packed with synthetic fillers.

COCONUT MILK

Also a great alternative to pasteurized cow’s milk. But just like nut milk, it can be made with harmful ingredients. Recently Starbucks has started carrying this milk. They carry the sweetened, carrageenan filled kind. Tastes yummy, harmful to your health.

Reset Factor Recommendation: Look for this in the refrigerated section as well. Read your ingredients and make sure there are not a lot of additives in the coconut milk you are buying. You can make this one yourself as well. With the right ingredients (coconuts & water) this can be a great milk alternative.

Hope that clears up any confusion. Reach out if you have any further questions.

Have a healthy day!!
