Which types of fasting boost your immune system?

Studies show that fasting has incredible benefits—increasing mood, energy, mental clarity, weight loss, lowering inflammation, and boosting the immune system, helping it better defend against pathogens, viruses and bacteria.  There are three steps you’ll want to take to create this heightened immune response.  Step 1: Become Metabolically Flexible The first step to boosting your immune system is becoming metabolically flexible, this means you can easily go in and out of being a fat-burner and a sugar-burner. Metabolic flexibility has been shown by science as a valid approach to “dampening” the COVID-19 virus. Yet only 12% of American adults are metabolically healthy! How does metabolic flexibility help defend against viruses? Viruses do not have their own metabolism. This means that

Autophagy 101

In 2016 Dr. Ohsumi changed the fasting landscape when he won a Nobel prize for his work on autophagy. Autophagy is a process that helps your cells “take out the garbage”, removing damaged cells in order to generate newer, healthier cells. It’s something a healthy body does naturally, to promote healing and overall well being.  So, what does autophagy have to do with fasting?  Well, fasting is an effective way of triggering this magical autophagy process. Keep in mind, autophagy is different from ketosis, which is a fat burning state, while autophagy is a cellular detoxification, anti-aging and healing process. While fasting is one of the best ways to stimulate autophagy, there are a few other ways as well.

" Help those around you to truly thrive yourself" This episode is all about unlocking the benefits of herbal plants and unleashing our collective potential. Simon Cheng traveled the world — from the mountains of Tibet to the heart of Indonesia and forests of the Pacific Northwest — studying with the most accomplished masters in Eastern medicine and breathwork to heal himself and learn their art. A scholar in Chinese literature, Simon simultaneously delved into the ancient wisdom in classics on medicine, breathwork and the Tao or the way. He now synthesized everything that he had been given into an integrated system to help you attain radiant health — the culmination of which is Pique.  In this podcast,

Does Coffee Hurt or Help Autophagy?

We know that a few things help stimulate autophagy —the body's ability to clean out damaged cells and toxins, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. Some of these things are fasting, HIIT training, quality sleep, a high fat-low carb diet and limiting protein. However, there is one more thing that this study says will boost autophagy, and that is COFFEE! According to the study, “...trials revealed that chronic consumption coffee is associated with the inhibition of several metabolic diseases as well as reduction in overall and cause-specific mortality. We show that both natural and decaffeinated brands of coffee similarly rapidly trigger autophagy in mice. One to 4 h after coffee consumption, we observed an increase in autophagic flux

Autophagy Dysfunction And Immunity

2021-01-05T23:02:22+00:00Health|

Earlier this week I discussed a new meta analysis titled Intermittent fasting, a possible priming tool for host defense against SARS-CoV-2 infection, has made some impressive findings about the benefits of fasting, specifically autophagy fasting, in promoting health and preventing COVID-19.   As I dove deeper into the science, I found more and more research around “autophagy dysfunction” and what that means for your immunity and lung health. Given the state of the world right now, our health and immune strength is incredibly important, and autophagy plays a vital role in clearing out dysfunctional parts of cells, so the cell can be more receptive to making energy and participating in a healthy immune response.  First, a refresher on autophagy: Autophagy

Autophagy and Your Immune System

Hot off the press! A recent meta analysis published in October 2020 titled Intermittent fasting, a possible priming tool for host defense against SARS-CoV-2 infection, has made some impressive findings about the benefits of fasting, specifically autophagy fasting, in promoting health and preventing illness.   Directly from the study:  “[...]strengthening immunity along with maintaining a healthy living is the best way to survive this disease. As a healthy practice, calorie restriction in the form of intermittent fasting (IF) in several clinical settings has been reported to promote several health benefits, including priming of the immune response. This dietary restriction also activates autophagy, a cell surveillance system that boosts up immunity. With these prevailing significance in priming host defense, IF could

Ketosis versus Autophagy: What’s the difference?

2020-11-16T21:16:11+00:00Health|

This is a great question I got in one of my live Q&A sessions that I thought was worth further exploration. What is the difference between ketosis and autophagy? First, let’s start with ketosis. Ketosis is a state of healing that signals your body is burning fat for energy.  This is why most people come to fasting and the ketogenic diet, for weight loss. But there are so many other amazing health benefits to ketones. Ketones travel up to the brain and enhance neurological healing. Ketones increase GABA and calm the brain. Ketones also have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body.  How do you get into ketosis? Well, the answer to this question will vary for each person, depending

4 Ways to Use Autophagy Fasting to Slow Down Aging

2020-05-22T14:25:17+00:00Fasting Techniques, Nutrition|

Autophagy fasting? What’s that? Well, for starters, have you noticed that everyone around you is fasting? Curious what the craze is about and why so many people are giving up food? The credit for much of the excitement needs to be given to one man: Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi. In 2016, Dr. Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for discovering a self- repair mechanism in our body called autophagy. It turns out that when you put your body into a starvation state, the cells go looking for food… and they find that food by feasting on the toxins that are already inside the cell! It’s an incredible self-detoxification process that our bodies are naturally born with. So how […]
