Gluten has gotten a bad rap for over a decade now.
Gluten free alternatives are popping up everywhere. And it probably feels like everyone around you is going gluten free.
But is gluten the real enemy? Researchers and doctors that specialize in nutrition have been asking themselves this for several years.
What is in gluten that has everyone so sick?
To first answer that question, let’s look at what gluten is. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat and cereal. Gluten has a protein called Gliadin. Gliadin was not found in the wheat grown years ago. The new hybrid of wheat that is being grown today has large amounts of gliadin.
According to Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly, gliadin is known to:
bind to opiate-receptors in the brain that induce appetite, as well as behavioral changes including ADHD, social detachment, and bipolar moods.
stimulates appetite. Research show that people who consume gliadin consume 400 calories more per day.
Although gliadin is one of the culprits that makes gluten harmful to the human body, it’s not the worst part of gluten. And it’s NOT what is making everyone sick.
What is glyphosate? You most likely know glyphosate as Roundup that you spray on your weeds in your garden. Well farmers are spraying it on your wheat before they harvest it.
Glyphosate is known to lethally disrupts the important pathway found in beneficial gut microbes. Gut bacteria aid in digestion, synthesize vitamins and strengthen the immune system. Research has found that Roundup significantly disrupts this process.
Glyphosate also inhibits the enzymes produced by the gut microbiome, which are critical to detoxifying chemical compounds that the body is exposed to. Humans exposed to glyphosate become even more vulnerable to the damaging effects of other chemicals and environmental toxins they may encounter.
Glyphosate also causes inflammation over months and years of exposure, leading to consequences such as gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and chronic pain.
So what can you do?
1.Start by eating organic non-gmo wheat only.
This wheat has not been treated with glyphosate. But it will still have gliadin in it.I recommend organic sprouted wheat breads, like Ezekiel bread. No glyphosate, minimal gliadin.
2.Repair your gut
If you have not incorporated a gut repair protocol into your health habits, now is the time.
Taking a probiotic is a good start, but not the only solution. Healing your leaky gut with bone broth and Restore will help as well.
Since most restaurants don’t serve organic food, taking enzymes when you eat out to assist your digestive system in breaking down herbicides and pesticides is a really good idea. Call my office for more info on the enzyme I recommend.
