Where are you getting exposed to LEAD?

The most common question I get about heavy metals is…
“Where am I getting exposure to these metals from?”
It’s confusing. And hard to believe when I tell you.
But one of the primary places is your food. Even organic food.
I like to make health concepts simple, but this is a subject that is confusing. So bare with me as I walk you through this toxic exposure.
To begin with, let me tell you that in my office we have tested hundreds of people for heavy metals. There are two metals that show up consistently; lead and mercury.
Many of you know that mercury is in fish. In fact, I have heard a lot of you say you avoid fish because of it. Smart choice.
But where are you getting lead?
Below is a list of foods that have been tested for lead and shown up high. In fact, many of these foods are so high they should have a warning sign on the food about the lead levels. Let me remind you that the World Health Organization states that there are no safe levels of lead in the human body.
Here are some of the foods you need to look out for:
The Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) recently tested drinks on the market, especially those marketed to children. The report states that a whopping 85% of the tested drinks contained enough lead to require a warning label. The results are alarming since 125 our 146 products had enough lead in a single serving to justify a warning.
According to the ELF, lead was found in major brands of juice including:
Welsh’s, Great Value, Kroger, Traders Joe’s, Walnut Acres Walgreen’s brand, Minute Maid, Gerber, Del Monte, and Dole.
Plus, lead was found in organic brands such as, 365 Everyday Value® Organic, Earth’s Best® Organic, and O Organics™.
Hot Sauces
A new study out of the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) reported that they’ve found concerning levels of lead in several types of imported hot sauces that were tested.
The study, by Shawn Gerstenberger and Jennifer Berger Ritchie, and published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Health, is the first known investigation into lead levels in hot sauces, according to the university.
Protein Drinks
Consumer Reports revealed that several popular highly-processed protein powders like Myoplex, Muscle Milk, Designer Whey and the GNC brand – all contained unacceptable levels of arsenic, cadmium and lead.
According to Consumer Reports editor Andrea Rock,” Consuming these kinds of protein drinks on a regular basis can in some cases create the risk of chronic exposure, even at low levels, to heavy metals such as cadmium and lead that can pose health problems, particularly to vulnerable people.”
Organic Foods
The state attorney general has accused several large California grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, of selling lead-tainted ginger and plum candies in a case that underscores how little consumers know about the food they eat.
The lawsuit, filed April 30 in San Francisco Superior Court, argues that Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, 99 Ranch Market, Island Pacific Supermarket, Marina Food and other retailers have been selling candy, snacks and bulk food made with ginger or dried plums that contains dangerously high levels of lead.
Consumer health watchdog As You Sow tested 35 of 50 chocolate products, including chocolate bunnies and eggs..
Lead was found in the chocolates of the following manufactures:
Trader Joe’s, Hershey’s, Green and Black’s, Lindt, Whole Foods, Kroger, Godiva, See’s Candies, Mars, Theo Chocolate, Equal Exchange, Ghirardelli, Earth Circle Organics, and more, for failure to warn of lead and/or cadmium in their chocolate products.
For a full list of chocolates see link below:
Baby Food
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) analyzed 11 years of data from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and found that food, and baby food in particular, is a meaningful – and surprising - source of lead.
EDF‘s data found:
  • Lead was detected in 20% of baby food samples compared to 14% for other foods.
  • Eight types of baby foods had detectable lead in more than 40% of samples.
  • Baby food versions of apple and grape juices and carrots had more samples with detectable lead than the regular versions.
As depressing as it might seem, there are some ways you protect yourself.
1.Get educated
Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to toxins in your foods. Keep learning. Know which foods are best to avoid.
2.Detox metals regularly
Detoxing is not for the earthy crunchy anymore. Detoxing is a powerful tool you can use to avoid many serious health problems.
We have four levels of detoxing we teach in my office. I will be going over those four levels at our September 23rd Beyond Your Genes Event. Email Dana at my office for more information on that event. Her email is
Keep learning. Empower yourself. Health is a journey.
Have an awesome day!

Is it time to detox HEAVY METALS?

As many of you know I strongly feel we all need to include detoxing into our health plans.

Even if you are cautious of the foods you eat, the beauty products you put on your body, and the chemicals in your home environment, there are still thousands of toxins you can not control being exposed to.

Heavy metals fall into this category.

Where do you get heavy metals from?

Too many places to count.

Metals, like lead, are found in the soils your food is grown in, your beauty products, your water, and old homes. Lead also is one metal that will get passed down through the generations

Lead is stored in the tissues of your body, especially your bones. Lead will leach out of your bones at time of greatest hormonal change or as you age and the bone breaks down and demineralizes.

Mercury you get from dental fillings, fish, and flu shots.

Aluminum exposure happens with cookware, deodorant, medications and certain vaccines.

All these metals bio accumulate in your body. One exposure doesn’t harm your health, but small repeated exposures do.

What symptoms do metals cause?

Ones that you wouldn’t suspect.

Once in your bloodstream metals tend to migrate up to the brain. There are only two places in your brain that are not protected by a blood brain barrier; your pituitary and hypothalamus.

When metals accumulate in your pituitary and hypothalamus they start to mess with your sleep, hormones, and moods.

They also sit in your gut, changing the ph of your gut lining. This allows fungus, bad bacteria, and parasites to thrive in your gut.

What can you do about it?

The first step is to test yourself. There are many ways to test. But a provoked urine test is considered the most helpful when evaluating metals stored in your tissues.

Many of you have reached out to us asking about our heavy metal detox, how we test, and how you know if metals are the source of your problem. I wanted to create resource where you can get all those questions answered. Below is a video I did to answer all these questions.

This is a subject you are going to hear more about in the world of health. It truly is the source of many unanswered health problems. Please reach out if you have any questions.

As always, I hope that helps!

5 Ways To Get Rid Of Joint & Back Pain

We’ve had a lot of request lately.

People want to know what we are doing in our office to help people heal so fast.

My office manager, Jessica, and I have been answering emails, facebook messages, and phone requests for our nutritional protocols.

And if you know me, you know I like to keep things simple, effective, and easy to apply.

Yet we live in a time where getting healthy has become complicated. One problem, one pill solutions are no longer working. Our bodies are getting more physical, emotional, electrical, and chemical stress than ever before.

So I had to come up with new protocols to meet the new demands of the human body. And I had to simplify it so that it was easy to follow and effective.

For the next few weeks I will be rolling out my protocols for everything from insomnia, anxiety, gut repair, pain, thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, etc. If there is something you want to know, email me and I will make sure I address it.

Today I want to help you solve muscle & joint pain.

Here are 5 things you can do to finally end your pain:

1.Line up structure

This is a no brainer. Whether it’s your back, knee, or shoulder the very first step you should take is to make sure the joint is in alignment. Only a chiropractor can do this effectively.

2.Remove inflammatory foods

What you eat causes your body to inflame. Some of you will feel it in your neck, some in your gut, some in your knee, everyone’s systemic inflammation will show up differently.

Simple solution, pull out all white processed foods.

White flour, white sugar, even white rice.
Change your oils from bad to good.
Stop eating fake chemical laden food.

For some of you getting off wheat flour altogether will change your pain levels.

3.Lubricate your joints

Your joints thrive on two things; water and good oils. Make sure you are getting plenty of good fat and drinking more water than you ever have before.

4.Repair the joint with herbs

For many of you the years of stress have damaged your joints. And even if you do the above steps, you still need to repair that damage that has been done.

I am super picky on the supplements I use. I want them to be effective and non toxic. Too many supplements have metals in them and other synthetic additives.

I use three supplements in combination to help my patients with disc, ligament, tendon, and joint pain:

Omega 3

JOT & KYRO are both by Systemic Formulas. They are a combination of herbs like Hawthorn Berry and Slippery Elm that nourish muscles, mixed with proteins like collagen, chondroitin sulfate, msm.

This combo has been crazy effective for knee, hip, and low back pain.

Omega 3,6,9 supplements lower inflammation. Especially in the brain and in joints.

Now here is the trick with supplements like this: your target the condition you want to resolve with high doses for a short period of time. Because of the potency of these supplements, they are not meant to be on them for months after months.

I recommend 4 JOT & KYRO combined with 3 grams of Omega 3 oils everyday for 30-60 days. After 60 days you stop the protocol.

5.Check Heavy Metals

Lead lives in your bones. With age and changes in hormones, it gets released from the bone.

This can cause more inflammation and pain in the joint.

If you have chronic joint pain and have done the steps above and you still feel bad, you need to look at your lead levels. We are seeing years of pain disappear when we detox the body from harmful substances like lead.
I want you to succeed at your health.
You deserve to live in a body that feels amazing!

If you want to try JOT/KYRO mix reach email Jessica at

We are extending a 15% discount on that combo for next week for those of you who want to give it a test run.

As always, I hope this information helps you be a healthier version of you. Reach out if you have any questions.

Have an awesome day!

Can My Kids Follow A Ketogenic Diet?

I get this question a lot.

Once someone sees how effective the ketogenic diet can be for themselves, they want the same for their kids.

Should you restrict carbs for kids?
Can they fast?
Is all that fat good for them?

Here are my top 3 recommendations for applying the ketogenic diet to your kids:

I have always believed that my job as a parent is to teach my kids WHY it is important to make your health a priority. So I am talk about health with them a lot.

If you look at the wave of different diet crazes that have been popular in the past few decades (paleo, atkins, whole 30,) they all have one thing in common: low carb.

There is a reason for that. When you lower your carbohydrates you:

  • lower inflammation
  • lower blood sugar
  • increase ketones

Bottomline: The ketogenic diet is a HEALING diet.

Explain to them that their brains love all the good fat they are eating. I teach my kids that if they have a big test coming up, increase their avocado & egg consumption (two of their favorite foods). If they have an important sporting event, I remind them that sugar can make them more prone to injury.

It’s that simple.

I highly recommend you don’t start counting carbs with you kids. But what I do recommend is that you teach them that there are good carbs & bad carbs. It’s as simple as saying this:

Good carbs come from nature, like an apple.
Bad carbs have sugar, like a piece of cake.

Good carbs energize you.
Bad carbs make you sleepy.

Good carbs fill you up faster.
Bad carbs leave you hungry a few hours later.

With the concept of fat remind them to eat some fat with every meal.

My son is a carb lover. He often reaches for a carb filled treat first. After years of struggling to get him to stop eating so many carbs, I switched the conversation to add fat in. I discovered that he liked avocados. So with almost every meal I slice open an avocado and make sure he has some on his plate. He also loves smoothies, so I pour brain octane in his smoothie and he doesn’t even know it.

The minute I took my focus off his carb load and put it on increasing is good fat, his carb cravings improved.

Butter, eggs, avocados, raw whole milk, raw nuts these are staples in our household.

I know this a controversial thought. Have your kids skip breakfast? Isn’t it the most important meal of the day. Well, actually it’s not.

When I am coaching a patient back to health, one of the first concepts I teach them is to skip breakfast. The most common response I get when I tell them this is “Great! I hate eating in the morning anyway”. People are often relieved.

Now I know what many of you are thinking, “if my kid doesn’t eat, they will have a melt down”.

This is because they are eating a high carb diet. Especially at dinner. Once you switch them to lower carb, higher fat you will notice that they can go longer periods without food and be just fine.

My son hates breakfast. So I don’t push it. But you better believe that he gets a high fat dinner so that he can handle the morning in school without food.

Remember our bodies are chemistry. You can really manipulate your mental clarity, energy, metabolism by working with the QUALITY of food that is going into your body.

Teach that to your kids and you will find that one day they become healthy adults.

Hope that helps! I know this a controversial subject; I am here to simplify it for you. Reach out if you have any questions.

Have an awesome day!

KETOGENIC Do's & Don'ts

I get a ton of questions every week from people trying to understand the ketogenic diet.

There is a lot of misinformation out there on what the ketogenic diet is, how you get into ketosis, and best practices for measuring.

So I want to clarify it for you today.

For starters, why would you want to train your body to get into ketosis?

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead; this results in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body.

The presence of ketones in your blood is an indication that your body is burning fat for energy. Ketones are magic for your brain. They give you mental clarity, energy, and research is now proving to us that ketones help you fight cancer.

But unlike other diets where you are just restricting certain foods, the ketogenic diet is about eating a certain way to get your body into a ketogenic state.

It’s chemistry. Not a food plan.

Here are the 4 Do’s and Don’ts that will help you get into a ketogenic state. For a more detailed explanation, I have included a FB live I did yesterday on Ketogenic diet. Hope this helps!

Keep your net carbohydrates below 50 grams.
Be sure more than 50% of your daily intake is good fat.
Intermittent Fast 15 hours everyday.

Because you are trying to alter the chemistry of your body, measuring is super helpful. I use the Precision blood glucose/ketone reader. I take a blood glucose and ketone reading first thing in the morning when I wake up and right before my first meal.

3.Diet Variation

The goal of the ketogenic diet is not to eat low carbs all the time or to try and be in the ketogenic state all the time. The goal is to click in and out of ketosis quickly.

I am a huge fan of diet variation to avoid plateaus. Watch the video below for more of an explanation on how you can apply variation to your diet.

4.Check Your Gut

I have coached thousands of people through the ketogenic diet. The people who have the most difficulty getting into ketosis usually have some type of severe gut dysbiosis.

Fungus like Candida can produce an enzyme that blocks glucose and insulin receptor sites leaving lots of glucose floating around in your bloodstream. If glucose is high, your body will not secret ketones.

If you are struggling to get into to ketosis, check your gut.

1.High Protein

This is not a high protein diet. It’s moderate to minimal protein. Too much protein will turn to sugar in your body and block you from being in a ketogenic state.

Everyone gets into ketosis a little differently. If you are doing the ketogenic diet with a friend, your results may be different than theirs.

3.Exogenous ketones

As the ketogenic diet has become popular, so have ketogenic supplements. Since ketones are a sign that your body is burning fat, adding ketones into your body isn’t necessarily going to make you lose weight. See my explanation for this in the video.

4.Give up

Don’t give up on this way of eating. It can be a challenge in the beginning to understand all the pieces. Once you get it figured out for you, you will feel supercharged on this diet.

Hope that helps! Reach out if you have any questions.

3 MUSTS for keeping your PETS healthy

Many of you know that we lost our family dog to lymphoma last month.

She was only 8yo and one of the best dogs we have ever owned.

When she was first diagnosed we were shocked. How could our dog get cancer? We fed her an organic grain free kibble, we lived in a toxic free household, and we minimized the amount of drugs that went into her. I thought we were doing everything right to keep her toxic load low.

Two veterinarians we saw said she was a Rottweiler and they are just prone to cancer. Aka…it’s in her genes. But with everything I know about health, I knew that toxins turn on genes. So if my dog had a gene for cancer, something turned it on.

The other thing I know about genes is that if they get turned on with toxins, you can turn them off with the ketogenic diet, the right supplements, and a good detox.

Luckily we had a holistic vet, Dr. Stephanie Sur, that we had worked with for years. So we went to her looking for answers on how to fight cancer naturally with our dog.

Our dog was given a month to live once she was diagnosed. With the natural principles we used, we were able to enjoy her for another year and half.

Last Friday I asked Dr. Sur to come do a FB live with me. I wanted to interview her so you all can hear the do’s and don’ts of keeping your dogs cancer free.

In this interview, we talk about three key principles:

  • Keeping your pet’s environment toxic free.
  • What’s the best food to feed your pets.
  • How to apply the ketogenic diet to your pets.

I have attached the interview here for you to watch. I hope the information we share gives you more time with your pet, than I got with mine. If you find the info useful, please share it.

If you have any questions about the protocols I used with my dog please reach out. I am happy to share with you what worked and didn’t work for us.

Have an awesome day!

Healthy Gut ›   Microbiome ›

The key to a healthy GUT MICROBIOME

The bacteria in your gut is a whole new frontier for doctors to understand.

In 1928 penicillin was discovered. And it saved lives.

So the pharmaceutical companies made more and more antibiotics like penicillin to kill any bad bacteria that came around. And for decades’ antibiotics were revered as miracles.

Until they made too many. Bad bugs in our environment became super bugs.

And antibiotics stopped working. So much so that the CDC now reports it won’t make any new antibiotics.

This has forced scientists to look at our relationship with bacteria a little differently. What if bacteria aren’t all that bad? What if we WANT some bacteria in our bodies?

It is important to realize is that this understanding of bacteria being good is new for the medical world. The information we have on which bacteria are best is limited.

But if you pay attention, you will notice that slowly new research is emerging helping us understand which bacteria we want in our bodies and how we go about growing these good bacteria.

For example…

Did you know that we are starting to identify a bacterial balance in your gut that makes you hold onto weight?

Or depression and anxiety, did you know that a decline of good bacteria in your gut and an abundance of bad bacteria can contribute to this condition?

What about autism? Researchers have narrowed autism down to three strains of bacteria in the gut that might be common to all autistic children.

One of the current beliefs about your gut today, is that diversity of good bacteria is what is important. The more different species of good bacteria you have, the better.

Last week an interesting story came out of a young man who went to a small village in Tanzania to live for four days. The people in this village are one of the last hunter gatherer tribes known to exist.

They measured this man’s gut microbiome before he went and when he came home. After just four days in this small village his good bacteria went up by 20%. A growth that is unheard of in such a short period of time and impossible to obtain with a high powered probiotic.

What did this tribe eat that was so magical for the gut microbiome?

Berries, nuts, fats, and meat.

Sound familiar? But the real key was they ate a variety of the above foods. This tribe eats over 600 different species of birds. They cycle foods, rarely eating the same thing over and over again. So in four days this young man got exposed to foods he never ate before. And his gut microbiome benefitted from it.

What does this mean for you?

Stop eating the same foods over and over again. Be sure you are varying your meats and vegetables especially. Each new food improves the growth of new good bacteria into your gut.

I did a Facebook Live on this subject last week. Attached is the video.

As you move through your summer, think variety. If you like blueberries, try loganberries. If BBQ chicken is your favorite, how about turkey or duck for a change. Keep mixing it up. That’s the key.

As always, hope that helps.

Cheers to being the healthiest version of you possible!

Have an awesome day!!

Signs you're GLUTEN intolerant

Many people have gluten allergies and don’t know it.

In fact, for many of you gluten is source your symptoms.

Trouble is gluten allergies don’t present like a typical allergy.

You won’t get hives or break out in a rash.
You don’t throw up when you eat it.
Your stomach doesn’t hurt after a high gluten meal.

Gluten allergies present much differently than other allergies.

So how the heck would you know if your body was not responding well to gluten?

Here are the top 4 signs I know that someone’s gut is not responding well to gluten:

The classic gluten intolerant signs are brain fog, chronic low energy, joint pain, bloated belly, incurable hunger, trouble losing weight and depression for no particular reason.

But other conditions have a gluten intolerance at their root. Conditions like autoimmunity, hormone imbalances, mood disorders, and thyroid problems. If these symptoms and conditions are not improving it’s time to try the 2 week gluten free test.

What’s the 2-week GF Test?

The 2-week GF Test is where you take ALL sources of gluten out of our diet. This includes the most obvious ones like breads & pastas. But you really have to read labels. For example, did you know that cornstarch has gluten in it? Cornstarch is in many sauces. In order for this test to work, you have to pull every ounce of gluten out for 2 weeks.

What are you looking for during this test?

Any change in your symptoms. Sometimes this looks like a cloud that has been lifted from your brain and you start thinking clearly again. Or you wake up before your alarm for the first time. Or maybe that chronic knee pain you’ve had finally goes away.

For some of you, you won’t notice any change. But when you add gluten back in you feel worse. These are the people that have the most severe gluten allergies. Your gut may be so inflamed from the damage gluten does that in 2 weeks the inflammation is just starting to come down.

2.White Tongue

Wheat (which contains the highest amounts of gluten) has mold, pesticides, and glyphosate in it. Ingestion of these substances creates the perfect environment for yeast to grow.

Too much yeast in your gut is called Candida.

One of the classic ways you know you have Candida is by looking at your tongue first thing in the morning. A white coated tongue is a sign you have Candida. A diet high in breads, sugars, and alcohol are the main contributors to candida.

If you want to know more about Candida, check out my You Tube channel. I have done several short videos on what you need to do if you have this gut imbalance.

3.Bowel Habits

So let me be frank for a moment.

You need to have a bowel movement everyday. Twice a day is actually best. If that is not happening, you can pretty much assume your microbiome is not healthy.

The lining of your gut has delicate little cilia on it. These finger like projections help keep food moving through your gut. Gluten destroys these delicate cilia and slows down the movement of food through your gut.

When your gut can’t move food through it quick enough toxins have more access to your blood stream. This allows for autointoxication to happen and gives harmful chemicals access to your brain. Without proper bowel movement, food also can get stuck on the side walls of your gut and ferment, allowing candida to grow.

Not having a daily bowel movement can be a major health problem. The first step to repairing this problem is to take out the foods that are harming it. Gluten would be top on my list.

4.Chronicity of problem

Lastly, if you have a condition that is not improving it is time to remove gluten. When I have a patient who is not responding well to chiropractic care or not responding as quickly as I want, I think gluten intolerance.

I can not tell you the number of times I’ve had patients with chronic pain improve with the 2-week GF test. When the gut is damaged by gluten it creates inflammation. That inflammation circulates throughout your whole body. You will notice the inflammation the most in the areas of your body that are already weakened or injured.

I know it’s no fun to skip the bread. Ask yourself, which is harder: not eating bread or living in a body that doesn’t feel good.

I highly recommend you try the 2-week gluten test and see what happens. You may surprise yourself.

Hope that helps!

Have an awesome day!!
